Do Topical Stimulants Stop Hair Loss?

Many topical stimulants on the market that claim to effectively battle hair loss, but do they actually work? Rob Angelino, the founder of HAIRLAB, a medical and natural hair restoration center located in Beverly Hills, California, explains at some of the products out there, explains what they are made of and gauges how if they really do work:

Rogaine: Perhaps the best-known name in the topical hair loss treatment market, Rogaine is also known off-brand as minoxidil. This is a product that is put onto the scalp about twice a day to promote hair growth. A lot of people don’t like the texture of this product as they find it sticky, but new Rogaine Foam solves this problem and is generally preferred overthe original formula. The way Rogaine works is, like many topical stimulants, as a vasodilator. This means that it increases blood flow and circulation to the scalp, which in turn helps the follicles do their job of growing hair better. The problem with Rogaine is that it is not in of itself powerful enough to stop the natural process of balding caused by DHT. While it does increase blood circulation, your natural DHT enzyme is still going to cause many of your hairs to fall out. So the hair that does grow back with Rogaine is often thin and wispy.

Viviscal: This company mostly makes supplement tablets which promote thicker hair, but they also produce a topical scalp lotion to be used to increase the effectiveness of the tablets. The lotion contains many of the same ingredients as the pill, including vitamin C, silica compounds, and concentrated fish oil. While again, not a cure-all, this product is  effective in promoting hair growth and also will improve your skin and nails.

Revivogen: This product claims to be “dermatologist formulated” and also claims to block DHT, the enzyme that causes most hair loss. It can be used by both men and women, according to the company’s website. They claim to reduce DHT production, block the androgen receptors, and thereby stimulate hair growth and reduce hair loss.

NuHair: This is a natural herbal DHT blocker that combines Phytosterol with Saw Palmetto, He Shou Wu, Selenium, Zinc and other natural herbs and minerals. It promotes healthier hair growth and does thicken hair, but it is not a magic cure. Like all of the abovementioned products, it has to be used regularly and a client must stick with it if he expects results.

Biosil: This company creates a variety of supplements to be taken orally that contain silicon which promotes the growth of collagen, keratin and other hair, nail- and skin-strengthening enzymes. They also market shampoos, conditioners and topical stimulants for the scalp. We have had many of our female clients come in and rave about this product, not only for what it does for hair, but also for one’s skin and nails. As natural product, it really cannot hurt to try it out.

With a combination of any of the abovementioned products and laser therapy and healthy diet, you are sure to see some results. Sometimes the effect of DHT is simply too strong to combat and a hair transplant procedure is your only sure-fix option. The most important thing to remember with these products and other strategies is to stick with it. There is no such thing as a magic bullet that will cause your hair to return its youthful appearance after a week. But by using these products as directed, and combining them with each other or other hair growth treatments, you are sure to see some results.
