Is it okay to use cold water with nasal rinses?

I have vasomotor rhinitis - is it okay to use cold water or would that damage and swell the nasal membranes?

Vasomotor rhinitis cannot be cured completely but can be brought under a measure of control. Avoidance of the irritants is a common sense method of controlling vasomotor rhinitis (though many irritants, such as weather changes, cannot of course be controlled). Prophylaxis therapy is also recommended as it will help protect the patient before being exposed to the irritant.

There are a number of medications that may be effective in the treatment of vasomotor rhinitis. In general, the available treatments are similar to those used in allergic rhinitis.

Ipratropium bromide is available in nasal spray formulation. It may be of benefit, particularly in the presence of marked rhinorrhoea.

Nasal corticosteroid sprays may be prescribed, and often work well when used regularly. These control inflammation of the nasal tissues.

Oral decongestants, such as pseudoephedrine-based pills, may provide benefit, but are associated with side-effects such as nervousness and jitteriness, insomnia, hypertension, and so on. (Pseudoephedrine is a sympathomimetic drug, which means that it simulates the effect of fight-or-flight chemicals, such as adrenaline, in the body.) A trial and error reduction of dosage may alleviate the side-effects while maintaining the effectiveness.

Decongestant nasal sprays (as opposed to oral decongestants) are not recommended. These may provide short term relief, but excessive use may result in rhinitis medicamentosa (a type of rebounding) – the nasal blood vessels get even more hypersensitive. Overuse or addiction to decongestant nasal sprays is actually a cause of vasomotor rhinitis.

Antihistamines are designed for use in allergic rhinitis and, while considered safe, are rarely effective. Interestingly, azelastine, the only topical antihistamine spray currently available in the United States, has shown some benefit in non-allergic or vasomotor rhinitis.

Many patients find irrigation with nasal saline spray alleviates symptoms. Nasal saline spray dilutes irritants and mitigates their effects. (Stir one teaspoon of non-iodised salt into 500 millilitres of boiled or distilled water, and pour into nasal spray dispensers when cool).

my horse has hock arthritis after i ride her should i use hot or cold treatment?

my horse has hock arthritis, so her bones need to fuse. my vet said i should continue to ride her. after i ride i want to either ice or heat her hock. but i dont know weather i should use cold or hot treatment and for how long? i have also been looking at magnetic hock wraps( if you have ever tried using magnetic therapy on your horse please let me know your results) ?????

I am around jumpers and dressage horses all the time that have the problem that you are refering to. The best thing that I think you can do the hock magnetic wraps, this will increase blood circulation flow to the area that is being affected helping to stop damage. I have had jumpers with bowed tendons this has helped, because it keeps swelling way down. What I would HIGHLY! reccomend is getting you horses Hocks Injected with somekind of Hyaluronic Acid injection. Legend and Adequan works wonders for some of my friends jumpers that have this and it can injected directly into the hock, but you need to get them once about every two months or so depending on the severity of the case. I would do this because it will cause instant relief to your horse as long as they are on it. You can also try cold hosing it and bute to help relieve swelling, I know that they make hock ice wraps and they help as well, you can leave them on for 15-20 mins at a time.
