Is diatomaceous earth a non-toxic and effective treatment against cat fleas?

Yes. You can spread this around the yard, as well as rub a bit in your cat's fur.

It kills fleas by drying up there outer "shell", once that's done they don't survive long.

Just be sure to get food grade DE if you're going to do this.

Vaccines Against Allergies (Hardcover)

Vaccines Against Allergies (Hardcover)

We are celebrating this year the hundred years anniversary of allergen-specific immunotherapy. In 1911 Leonard Noon published his seminal work "Prophylactic inoculation against hay fever" describing his attempts to achieve active immunity against "grass pollen toxin" by administering increasing doses of grass pollen extract before the grass pollen season to allergic patients. Although it was unknown at that time that allergy represents an immunological hypersensitivity disease, the treatment was effective and many observations made by Noon remained valid until today. Today allergen-specific immunotherapy is well established as the only allergen-specific and disease-modifying treatment for IgE-mediated allergies and has long-lasting effects. In fact, more than 25% of the population suffer from IgE-mediated allergies which therefore represent a major health burden of our society, particularly because untreated allergy often progresses to severe disabling forms of disease, such as asthma and sometimes kills sensitized people through anaphylaxis.

Committing a parent against their will to treatment for mental illness?

Has anyone ever had to commit a parent for mental illness because you believe they are a danger to themselves and society? What criteria do they have to meet? Would you recommend doing this? Are there legal ramifications? etc.etc.

My mother is bipolar and recently homeless and is constantly coming up to my work for motel money which, unfortunately, I cannot afford. I'm afraid she may be a danger because she will not acknowledge that she is the one with the problems, it's everyone else. I'm at a loss as to what to do next. If I were rich I'd just buy her a house and such but I am not. She's been in and out of mental institutions my whole life and it's never really done much good and she's been kicked out of all the shelters around here (she's that bad). My dad said that to commit her I would have to take guardianship of her. I don't really know what that means exactly but it doesn't sound good. Legal implications? I canNOT live with her! Never again. But I don't want her homeless.

My father lied to get me committed, so no one would know he was abusing me. It was hell. So you be careful, you are taking away someones rights.

I know having a bi-polar parent who won't admit they are avhing problems is an emotonal hell. But until she gets sick of her life, she won't improve. Bi-polars often end up homeless because of their choices and it can take years for them to get wtih the right type of help as well as the right medication.

You acn't commit her unless you can prove she is a danger to self and/or others and refuses treatment. IF you truly think she's going to harm someone and you'll have to testify to what she's said taht makes you belive htat. You can call your local County Mental Health center and ask them to commit her. If she's just homeless, they can't commit someone for being homeless, even if they are seriously mentally ill. Committing her will only be temporary. Being Bi-polar, soon as she's on medication, she'll be considered sane, competant and can once agian go off it. I've never yet seen a person wtih bi-polar end up committed and change. They have to get sick of their life, the highs and lows and finally chose the help on their own.

Think of it like having an alcoholic parent. You can force them into treatment, but it won't keep them clean and they'll go right back to the alcohol until they are sick of it and can't stand to stay as they are anymore.

The reality is, even if you get her committed, the longest that committment will last is six months adn she'll stop using the drugs soon as she's no longer committed. See it many times.

Your best bet is to bar her from your work. Have the cops called on her if she even attempts to come into the building to see you. You can even have a restraining order put against her; that way if she comes near you, the cops can hall her off. If she goes off on them, they can then have her committed to treatment for six months.

Stop giving her all help, totally. As long as you help her, she'll not get sick of her life as it is. Tell her you love her, but until she chooses to get into treatment and stay in treatment, you can't be around her or do anything for her. It will be very hard, very hard, even break your heart. But if you keep helping her even a little, she'll have no reason to say to herself. I've had enough of being homeless of my family not wanting me around, maybe I need to seek some help.

She's already homeless, you are just enabling her temporarily with help.

Do not accept guardianship of her; if you do that and she commits a crime, you are legally responsible for damages adn you can be billed for all hospitalizations. Commitment does not mean you accept guardianship. Never sign a paper saying you are responsible for her in anyway or you'll end up paying the bills, including any credit cards she takes out you could end up being responsible to pay for them if you are listed as her guardian.

I'm telling you the best things you can do for her is do nothing, do nt help her in any way. Tell her you love her, but you can't be around her or give her even a penny, until she's been in treatment and on medication for six months. Then do not give her money, give her love and emotional support. If she gets help, she can qualify for Social Security Disability and that will be her income.

I know this is hard and she may not even be bi-polar, if she's been in and out of mental hospitals all her life, she may have something else going on that isn't being diagnosed and that's why it's never being resolved. Bi-polar people are highly productive when they are not manic or depressed. If she is never productive, always homeless, that could be a sign she has something going on other then Bi-polar.

You need to go hard core with her. If ou want, take her something to eat when you can, but don't give her one penny. If she truly is Bi-polar, she will in time get tired of her life. Even if she doesn't, she has to choose to ask for help or it will never last. I've seen people committed, they take the drugs for the time they are committed, then soon as that commitment is over, they go right back to how they were, until they get sick of the life they are living. Some die on the streets, that's the reality and it's a hard to accept when you love someone and worry about their safety.

I don't know where you live, but it's likely she does not meat the criteria for commitment. I say this because most homeless shelters work wtih the county mental healthy out reach workers and if she met the criteria for commitment, they'd have already had her committed.

I'm sorry you have to go through this, but giving her money only will help her keep living as she is. You stop helping her, she will be on the streets and of course that can put her life at risk, but you can't rescue her from herself.

I wish the reality was better and I wish our mental health systems offered better quality help; because many get hurt and abused or drugged senseless when they ask for help, so they stop asking.
