Thinking of moving to Hawaii, advice?

I am graduating with my masters in massage therapy in June.
I would love to work for the Hilton Village Beach Resort and Spa.
I want some experience working in a spa setting abroad for a couple years.
I'm from utah and I hate the cold so I'm sure I would love the climate there.
I understand that living costs are very expensive, a gallon of milk if $6, etc.
I would be making pretty could money though if I got the job about $100 an hour for various massage and spa treatments.
I know the culture is very different in hawaii then in utah, could someone please explain to me what it's like to live there, and what I should expect?

I don't believe Hawaii is technically "abroad" as it's not another country.

I expect you'd have a hard time finding spa work many places as you'd very likely be an outsider without experience taking work away from long-term locals who don't so readily have options to travel other places to work. Places like the Hilton Hawaiian Village are also going to have lots of experienced local types in line for any job -- that kind of stuff can be the most in-demand on an island fueled by tourism -- so you're looking at being at the end of the line somewhere else, and maybe trying to work your way up to the Hilton over many years.

You'd also likely still have financial problems -- though you might bill at $100 an hour, you're likely not working nonstop, and a good chunk of what you charge is almost certainly going back to the spa itself -- you don't keep it.

I'd expect if you want to live abroad, you might try someplace outside the U.S., and if you want warmer climate you might look into places like California, Texas, and Florida first -- you'd be more likely to have steady work, and to be able to afford the environment while you gain the experience you need. Places like California should also have more athletic types in demand of your services.

And if you truly want more background on Hawaii, I'd look into books like So You Want to Live in Hawaii and Culture Shock Hawaii, first. But I'd frankly try to get some experience elsewhere if you're fresh out of school. Trying to make a living in Hawaii as a newcomer in a field like that can be a lot rougher than you might expect.
