My daughter is three months old and I am trying to increase my mlk supply. I am desperate!!!?
I take fenugreek and mother's milk tea. I have had to supplement with formula for a month now and she is getting more formula than breast milk. I do not wnat to continue with formula even though I am returning to work in September. Any advice?
You will know that you are taking enough fenugreek when your sweat begins to smell maple syrupy. In addition to that oatmeal is a wonderful glactogogue.
You can take all the drugs and natural remedies in the world, but if your baby is not removing milk from your breast effectively and often, your supply will never increase. Your baby needs to nurse well at the breast at least 8-12 times in 24 hours including at night. The milk we make at night has 30% more calories than the milk we make during the day. In addition to this our prolactin levels are higher at night which leads to increased milk production.
Most lactation professionals recommend reducing yor current amount of supplement by 1 oz. at one feeding over 3 days. You can use an at breast supplementer to encourage your baby to spend more time at the breast and increase your supply, or you can pump lots to bump up your supply. One way to do this is with "super pumping" leave your pump out in a handy location and every time you walk by it pump for 3-5 minutes.
