Why doesn't a table fan rotate in the opposite direction when the phase and neutral input is reversed?
After all, an induction motor should reverse its direction if the armature supply is reversed, right?
The armature is the other winding than the field, so is the output winding on a generator. On an induction motor this is not so clear cut until you realize the rotor does have windings of a sort too. A table fan is an induction motor, of the shaded pole type. Other induction motors are reversed by reversing one of the supply phases, which connect to the field, so the field is reversed. If it is a single phase motor (it is actually a two phase motor), and reversing one winding of the field (phase) is usually ok to reverse them. With three phase motors any one phase is reversed to reverse the direction of rotation.
To answer your question, a shaded pole motor doesn't reverse because you are not reversing the field rotation by reversing the wires. The shading coil is a shorted turn on one side of each of the field poles. There are shaded pole motors that have a mechanical method of changing the shading coil over so they can reverse. The shading pole works by providing a delay to the field building up on that side, so that the field moves from one side to the other as it builds up during each cycle. It doesn't matter what the phase itself is.
