I'm taking chinese medicine-- chai hu long gu mu wan and an shen bu xin wan-- and have black stool?
Can the high mineral content or black color of the pills cause the black stool??
Please help before I go to the ER
To answer you well, one would have to know what your condition was before you started taking the pills, what the state of your poop was before those pills, what brand of pills you're using, and what was the condition you went in for??
Since its very difficult to verify fears of heavy-metals, pesticides, etc... in Chinese-med medicinals, I recommend that you use a brand that's easy to have confidence in (for those of us not in China and not in the know of Chinese manufacturing practices.) To tell you the truth, I dont think its an issue at all considering your question, but I want to give out some good information on the subject since given the high level of ignorance of the matter, people are quick to give knee-jerk paranoid comments. Anyway, I use and prescribe 'Plum Flower Brand' pills which can be found at Mayway.com; you can read about their standards on their website. There's other good brands of pills but I dont really use anybody else because most of the time I'm giving out powders instead of pills. Powders are more effective.
So, about your stools, are they also greasy/sticky?? (makes marks in the toilet that dont always get wiped clean with one flush) How about the smell, has it gotten worse? Funny questions to answer, I know, but the answers give good information. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, black stools are usually associated with too much heat and too much watery/greasy liquids in the body that aren't being processed correctly. Sorry if that doesn't make sense to you, a more satisfying explanation would take take a while.
One of the herbs in ChaiHuLongGuMuLiWan is actually excellent at addressing the black stools: Da Haung will make you poop (often used for constipation) out greasy/sticky crap stuck in your guts. AnShenBuXinWan on the other hands has some herbs that are greasy by nature and they definitely tend to make the stool tarry; its a somewhat tonifying formula and hard on digestion, I wouldnt be surprised if its the culprit.
Sometimes the best thing a good practitioner can do is make you poop out garbage thats stuck in your body and it might make you uncomfortable. On the other hand, a less skilled practitioner could've just as well given you 'wrong' herbs, or maybe herbs that are perfect for your main problem but your digestion is just not strong enough to deal, then they'd have to do something like give you other herbs which help you digest.
All in all, if I were you I'd ask the person who prescribed you the herbs. Knowing your condition, they're more qualified than anyone else to comment. This is one of those cases where it really helps if you and your practitioner speak the same language!
I'm guessing that your digestion is not strong enough to deal with the herbs (this happens soooo often.)

my doctor suggested a chinese dietary herbal supplement called Jia Wei Fang Feng Tong Shen Wan i havent had any luck finding any information on it does any one kno of any websites that might have information in this product. i want to know what it does how its used, how it works, side effects and what the success rate is and wether the product is safe to use....
