Is there a scientific reason of what makes hair straight, curly, wavy, thick, thin, ect?

I want to know why the hair curls, or waves. What makes in grow like that. Is there a chemical that causes it to be like that.

Not only from genes...Curly hair becomes curly because one side of the hair strand grows faster...That's the only thing I remember from reading the cosmetology book, But you get the point...it's like that.
