Has anyone ever recovered from trichotillomania?

I've been pulling hair from my scalp for the last 10 years - i've tried hypnotherapy and it hasn't worked. i've been referred to a psychotherapist by my GP about 2 years ago, but there was a year long waiting list for cognitive behavioural therapy.

what treatment did you under go? did you pay for it? how long were you being treated for? how frequently did you have to see a therapist? have you ever relapsed?

my local mental health services can only offer me weekday appointments - i do a mon-fri 9-5 so i'd have to take time off work. it's not something i really feel i want to explain to my work colleagues.

I have been pull free for three and a half years now (after pulling for approximately ten years). I started when I was seven or so, pulling out my eyelashes. They never really got too bad but I also compulsively groomed my eyebrows which left them thin. In high school I started pulling out hair from my scalp. By grade eleven I had a noticible bald spot that required effort to cover every day.

I saw my GP when my mom found out what I was doing. He prescribed Paxil which made me super sick and I refused to take it. I went back and he referred me to a mental health clinic. I saw a psychiatrist (who prescribed Zoloft) once every two weeks and a social worker/therapist once a week for a year. I spent six months on a 200mg/day dose of Zoloft.

I had my days where I would pull from certain areas, but conscious recognition of triggers and preventative measures that I developed with my psych team have really helped. As much as it's embarrasing for you now, a good team of doctors and some serious therapy makes it much easier to talk about. I am totally willing to tell anyone who asks that I used to pull my hair out and to inform them all about trich.
