Has anyone had experience with something called Biofen for reducing hair loss ?

It contains stuff like :
fenugreek seed extract, saw palmetto berry extract and flax lignans.

Is this stuff effective ?

There are severeal forms of baldenss. If it is male pattern baldness (Androgenetic alopecia) then the hairloss cannot be fully cured in most cases, but just frozen for some time with the treatments availiable on market today.

1) Hair transplant (FUE technology) creates really natural hairline, no scars, the best way to go if you have enough donor hair and money of course.

2. Propecia (Finasteride) and Minoxidil are the only ones approved by FDA and proven to work in most men so far.

Generic Propecia (finasteride) is also ok. I use it with same results, and unfortunately same sides(a bit dry feeling in the scalp) as brand propecia. Have tried lots of herbal crap before it and laser combs, so far the only thing that prevents my hairloss, not much regrowth, but has stopped my hairloss completely.
I buy from this pharmacy for the last 2 years - http://www.savemoneyrx.net/generic_propecia.html . It is under $1 per pill as I buy the 90 pills. (89$ for 90)

We prepare our Saw Palmetto extract from the ripe fruits (berries) of Serenoa repens palms which are Custom Wildcrafted™ in their wild native habitat in Florida and Georgia 2. To assure optimal extraction of Saw Palmetto's liposterolic compounds, the fruits are hand-harvested only when fully matured in late summer, are semi-dried in the shade, and are then thoroughly extracted. Our Saw Palmetto is not fumigated or irradiated.

Schiff's Saw Palmetto uses a standardized extract from the berries, containing concentrated active ingredients. Saw Palmetto extracts support healthy prostate function.* Primary Use: Maintain normal prostate health.* Saw Palmetto (sabal) is an herb that acts to tone and strengthen the male reproductive system. It may be used with safety where a boost to the male sex hormones is required. It is specific in cases of enlarged prostate glands. It will be of value in infections of the genito-urinary tract. Benign prostate enlargement appears to be triggered by abnormally high levels of the male hormones testosterone and dihydrotestosterone in prostate tissue. Saw Palmetto reduces absorption of these hormones within the prostate gland, while reducing inflammation and swelling. This reduces bladder obstruction and improve urinary flow. Saw palmetto does not appear to inhibit production of testosterone elsewhere in the body. At least three rigorous clinical trials have confirmed Saw Palmetto's ability to remedy urinary difficulties. In one comparative trial, it proved equal to the prescription drug Proscar as a source of symptomatic relief (although, unlike Proscar, it had no beneficial impact on the size of the prostate). Saw palmetto extract has also been combined with a nettle root extract to successfully treat benign protatic hyperplasia. One study using a combination of saw palmetto extract and nettle root extract showed positive actions on symptoms of BPH over a one-year treatment period. .

Promotes Prostate Wellness Saw Palmetto acts as a diuretic and urinary antiseptic, stimulates the appetite, inhibits the production of dihydrotestosterone (a hormone that contributes to enlargement of prostate) and it's good for poor appetite and prostate disorders. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Saw palmetto berry for 'Urination problems in benign prostatic hyperplasia stages I and II.' 'Daily dosage: 1 - 2 g saw palmetto berry or 320 mg lipophilic ingredients extracted with lipophilic solvents (hexane or ethanol 90 percent v/v); equivalent preparations. Mode of Administration: Comminuted herb and other galenical preparations for oral use. Actions: Antiandrogenic; Anti-exudative.' Benign prostate enlargement appears to be triggered by abnormally high levels of the male hormones testosterone and dihydrotestosterone in prostate tissue. Saw Palmetto reduces absorption of these hormones within the prostate gland, while reducing inflammation and swelling. This reduces bladder obstruction and improve urinary flow. Saw Palmetto prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydortestosterone, which helps to prevent the development of prostate disease and may also be beneficial for genitourinary problems, endocrine disorders, infertility, impotence, menstrual disorders, ovarian dysfunction, lactation, thyroid deficiencies, and painful menstrual periods. Saw palmetto does not appear to inhibit production of testosterone elsewhere in the body. At least three rigorous clinical trials have confirmed Saw Palmetto's ability to remedy urinary difficulties. In one comparative trial, it proved equal to the prescription drug Proscar (finasteride) as a source of symptomatic relief (although, unlike Proscar, it had no beneficial impact on the size of the prostate). Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Diuretic, sedative, tonic. It is milder and less stimulant than cubeb or copaiba, or even oil of sandalwood. Like these, it has the power of affecting the respiratory mucous membrane, and is used for many complaints which are accompanied by chronic catarrh.' 'It has been claimed that sabal is capable of increasing the nutrition of the testicles and mammae in functional atony of these organs. It probably acts by reducing catarrhal irritation and a relaxed condition of bladder and urethra. It is a tissue builder.' 'Dosages: Of fluid extract, ½ to 1 drachm. Of solid extract, 5 to 15 grains.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Saw palmetto appears, from clinical reports, to be a nutritive tonic. It is also an expectorant, and controls irritation of mucous tissues. It has proved useful in irritative cough, chronic bronchial coughs, whooping-cough, laryngitis, acute and chronic, acute catarrh, asthma, tubercular laryngitis, and in the cough of phthisis pulmonalis. Upon the digestive organs it acts kindly, improving the appetite, digestion, and assimilation.' 'Howev

Saw Palmetto berries typically consist of about 10% oils, FFA, free fatty acids. Thus, this pure herbal extract powder is about 4 times richer in the lipids and phytosterols that promote a healthy prostate. Used as a decoction, extract and tincture. Native Americans Americans have long used the fruit of this shrub for food and harvested honey from its flowers. Saw palmetto and birth control pills??

I take these herbal pills called "Ultimate Prostate Formula" because they have Saw Palmetto extract which helps clear skin. I have been on the birth control pill for almost two years, and was wondering if these pills or just Saw palmetto in general would interfere with my b.c. pills and make them not work right. Does anyone know if these pills will do anything to counteract the b.c., and what medicines DO mess with b.c. pills to make them not work?

Possible interference with the contraceptive effect of the birth control pill.......... YES...read this:

http://www.intelihealth.com/IH/ihtIH/WSIHW000/8513/31402/346487.html?d=dmtContent

and from drugs.com:
"What other drugs will affect saw palmetto?
Do not take saw palmetto without first talking to your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
birth control pills such as Triphasil, Ovral, Lo-Ovral, Nordette, Alesse, Demulen, Ortho-Novum, and many others; estrogen replacement products such as Premarin, Cenestin, Vivelle, Climara, Fempatch, and many others; .................
any other hormone-based medicine."

http://www.drugs.com/mtm/saw-palmetto.html

You need to use another form of contraception and talk to your doctor asap. Apart from the risk of getting pregnant I do also know that saw palmetto has an effect on testosterone metabolism and could have a detrimental effect on the development of a male foetus so all in all you need to use another form of contraceptive or stop taking the saw palmetto when using the birth control pill (BCP) as your only means of contraception.

You should talk to your doctor first before taking any other drug when on the BCP or other hormonal preparations. Also, it is better to talk to your doctor or a pharmacist before taking many herbal remedies as there are a few others that can interfere with the BCP or other hormonal preparations...such as St John's Wort and Agnus castus (another herbal remedy often used to regulate acne).

Hope this helps.
Best wishes.

edit:
You could talk to your doctor about using a BCP that has been designed specifically with acne in mind such as Dianette or Yasmin, which have cyproterone acetate or spironolactone, respectively, as a progestogen that acts to block testosterone. Again, as with saw palmetto it is imperative that you don't get pregnant taking one of these as the testosterone blocking effect of the progestogen in these preparations can feminise male foetuses.
