Does scalp hair regrow at different speeds?
Over 4 weeks ago, one of my children had a small piece of their hair pulled out at school. I keep looking at this bald patch and do see hair growing and can feel hair growing in which is covering approx 1/3 of the bald patch. The hairdresser said the other day the scalp is still smooth in places and should be growing in by now but I'm wondering if hair regrowth is a bit erratic and it grows at different speeds? I know when I have my legs waxed every 3-4 weeks, the girl always tells me that within a day or so other hairs will be breaking the skin surface as she can see them so I'm wondering if its the same with the scalp.
I forgot to say at the start of this, the entire bald bit was just pure white skin, and was clearly obvious when the top layer of hair was pulled back. Now it isn't so obvious but clearly a lot of hair still hasn't come through. Should I worry?
Hair follicles grow to a terminal length over a period of years, go into a resting stage, and after a while fall out, and are eventually replaced with a new follicle. The rate of growth of a hair follicle can vary greatly depending on age. Younger follicles tend to grow faster than older. At any time there are follicles of all different ages on the scalp. Some people tend to have a more even growth rate regardless of the age of the individual follicle. On others the growth rates can vary significantly according to the age of each follicle. The hair follicles that had gone into the resting stage and had already fallen out before the hair was yanked out are going to be the first ones to regrow. A dermatologist who can see the scalp can provide a more definitive answer than a hairdresser.
