How can I treat 4 yo daughter's cough now dr says to sit it out?

My daughter had her 5 in one preschool injections last week and has since developed a cough that is getting worse. I've tried honey, calpol and Benelyn cough medicine but nothing is soothing and last night she coughed the whole night! Dr says it is a virus that will go away on its own. I'm being induced tomorrow as i"m over 40 weeks pregnant and I'm so worried about the new baby being near to catch this cough! She probably won't be near the maternity ward now either, which is really upsetting! Is there anything over the counter that you've used successfully to speed recovery?

Congrats on your pregnancy. If you're not over 41 weeks, you could put off the induction another couple days...the stress of your other child being ill may not help you with labor, and it won't hurt your baby to hold off a day or two.

Your 4yo may have whooping cough (pertussis). It is a bacterial infection, so the doc can prescribe antibiotics to speed recovery and reduce the contagion--it is highly contagious! After about 48 hours of taking the antibiotics, it should be safe to be around her.

To ease symptoms, fill a bathroom with steam and let her sit in there and breath deeply for about 10 minutes, it'll help open her lungs. Having a vaporizer when she sleeps may also help. Definitely up her vitamin C, have her eat probiotics like yogurt, and have her drink warm liquids to keep the chest loose. If she doesn't want to drink much, make her some juice popsicles with vitamin C powder mixed in to help her get her vitamins.

--add--While there is a vaccine for pertussis, it's not 100% effective. Many children still get it even after being "vaccinated" because it requires 5 doses over time to build immunity. I recommend you get a second doctor's opinion and have him do the swab that will prove whether or not it's whooping cough/or virus.

Grief Recovery – 5 Years Later

People who’ve lost a loved one often ask how long it will be before the pain and agony of grief goes away. Of course, no one can answer this question because it is different for everyone. I’ve known people, especially older folks who’ve lost a spouse, who remarry within a year. That may not mean that they’re done grieving, it might just mean they couldn’t stand the loneliness and despair. And, I’ve known others who did not ever let go of losing someone dear to them. Grief recovery is no simple matter.

Grief Recovery

In my case, having lost a child, the most intense grief and pain lasted for five years. It was around the third year that I began to notice that as a family we were beginning to be more open when we talked about Robb. He was thirty-seven at the time of his death, and I know for myself I had a really difficult time getting back to normal. And I can’t really say that you ever get back to what you think is normal, because that kind of a loss changes everyone who was close to the deceased. For me, I think a lot of my grief was thinking about what a waste it was that he’d died so young. I think that was the big hurdle. Me, thinking, of all he’d accomplished and all that should have been ahead of him, and now all of that was never going to be.

I think what’s important for the bereaved, not that I have the ultimate answers to those questions, but it seems to me that it behooves us to try to find a way to lessen the grief by helping others in pain by sharing our thoughts. That can be done through groups such as Compassionate Friends, churches often offer help in that direction, as well as hospitals and funeral homes. It’s up to each one of us to find our way through those venues.  Some people have told me how soothing music has helped them a great deal. And writing our memories down and perhaps keeping a journal, I found to be very helpful. Reading books about grief and grief recovery can help.

Three months after I lost Robb, a friend asked me if I was done grieving. I couldn’t believe he asked me that, and his wife started screaming at him. But it just shows that lots of people in our society have no idea how difficult it can be to lose someone you love. Those of us, who have been through it, need to help guide those who have not.
