I just saw Star Trek. What powers all that technology?

All the technological adnaces in there are cool and all, but they all seem to be hooked on to one thing we don't have yet. A small, compact, high effieciency power source.

I think the future is leading towards some fission based power source, so I thought what do we have now! I looked into nuclear power, what a ripoff- they just use the rods to heat water to make STEAM. Seriously, all that for steam? STEAM as in circa 1900 steam oh wait its modern steam so its better.

So either we get SERIOUSLY low power deamanding devices, or we need some high output power sources.

So what's coming up or out today even neat like that? Transporters?

I saw a commercial for a Gamma Knife treatment. Is that even int he same line as the wave it over and cure it medical devices?

What about the radar/sonar/electronic recon? I heard AEGIS is like that.

In Star Trek, they use the annihilation of matter and antimatter to yield energy in its purest form; photons. They somehow convert these photons into usable electrical power.

I felt the same thing as you back when I first figured out that a nuclear power station is basically a big steam engine. Though it does make sense from a scientific standpoint, it does feel like we've smashed ther high-tech and the low-tech together in some awful combination.

Basically, the energy released in a nuclear fission reaction is carried as neutrons. Neutrons are not charged particles, so they cannot be confined by magnetic or electrical fields. The only way to convert their energy into usable electricity is to use them to heat a fluid (normally water), and then use that water to drive a turbine and generator with no more than 40% efficiency.

I know people have been saying it since the 60s, but practical fusion (not fission) power really is now on the horizon. Though the 'big science' approaches like tokamaks are still decades away from commercial power generation, smaller projects like Inertial Confinement Fusion and the Polywell are much more promising. The Polywell especially might be producing net power by 2020.

With nuclear fusion, there are fuels which are called aneutronic. If you do fusion on them, they do not release their energy as neutrons. Instead, they release it as charged particles, which you can deal with using electrical or magnetic fields. Basically, for an aneutronic fusion reactor, you would capture these particles in charged grids, producing voltage directly. No steam, no turbine, and potentially up to 95% efficiency!

And fusion fuels like helium-3 (aneutronic) and deuterium (neutronic, so steam needed) pack literally many thousands of times more energy than fission fuels like uranium and plutonium. There is also no long lived radiation hazard, and no harmful radiation whatsoever if you use an aneutronic fuel.

Cold Recon Scout Black with Secure Ex Sheath

Cold Recon Scout Black with Secure Ex Sheath

In almost every respect the Recon Scout is simply a 71/2 inch Trail Master Bowie. It offers the same steel heat treatment blade thickness blade shape and handle. Unlike other combat knives the Recon Scout s broad clip point is highly resistant to bending or breaking. It s ideal for long range cutting and slashing. Additionally the blade is equipped with a slightly concave false edge that measures approximately 31/2 long. Like the Trail Master the Recon Scout has a slight curve along the entire length of the blade. This curve allows the blade to be used in a draw cut as well as a chopping stroke. Plus the extra curve near the tip provides plenty of belly for emergency field dressing and skinning. The Recon Scout comes complete with a tough SecureEx sheath. Blade: 71/2 . Thick: 5/16 . Overall: 121/2 . Handle: 5 Long. Kraton. Sheath: SecureEx Sheath. Steel: SK5 High Carbon. Black Epoxy Powder Coat Finish.

Don't you think this would be a good idea for would be violent offenders?

like I am so sick of hearing people get off on murder, rape and other violent crimes, wouldn't it be a good idea, if we got them in prison to work like making number plates, beds, soft toys, clothes and shoes and other little nick nacks and do some manufacturing jobs and get rid of tvs and air con in prison which I think is so wimpy, like come one, their are people in the community who never get air con and tv, so why should someone who commit a crime and I don't care if they were under the influence of drugs, had a hard upbringing, what ever, even more of a reason to get them working, it may make them nicer people and they should get into trouble for using the drugs and may increase self esteem to be with and being harsh in prison may be better rehab instead of wussy counciling they get? what do you recon? and they shouldn't be able to sue for bad treatment either, if they hate it then tough? any opinions?

Turning prisons into a money making enterprise is a very bad idea. It would undermine what few rights the accused still have left, and encourage corruption. More innocent people would get sent to jail on circumstantial evidence and judges would become even more corrupt than they already are.

The way it works now, local jails can still get some money from state/federal funding but they don't usually operate at a profit, and the system is already bad enough. If prisons become profitable it would get even worse.
