Natural black curly haircare basics ?
I don't have a relaxer. but my mom straightened my hair all my life. I just recently stopped straightening it. It is very dry and brittle. i have to get it wet everyday to comb it out and when I run my fingers through it sheds a lot. The washing everyday just makes it even dryer than what is already was. I am going to cut my hair all off and grow it back natural and never apply heat. I want to wear it natural and grow it out healthy. First I want to know the basics on caring for natural black hair. I have curly hair. When I wash it, it goes into spirals but since it is so dry and damaged as it dries gets frizzy and untameable. So just fill me in on the basics of shampooing (i.e. what is a good shampoo for natural black hair and a regimen) and moisturizing, deep conditioning, switching shampoos and anything else that is a part of haircare such as protective hair styles for natural black hair. I would be glad to hear personal stories. thanks
I'm going to give you a very basic run thru of how to care for your hair. Good luck with your big chop as well:
a) Thou shalt not hair...at all. There are a number of techniques for drying natural hair without using heat such as twists and plaits. The blowdryer is evil.
b) Thous shalt pre-poo. Pre-poo is a technique that lessens the drying effect of shampoo on you hair whilst moisturising it. A video of how to do this can be found on:

But it is basically applying oil(castor/olive/grapeseed/coconut) or a cheapy conditioner to you hair b4 you shampoo
3) Thou shalt co-wash. Co-washing is what it sounds like. Using conditioner to wash your hair sometimes instead of shampoo. As long as you give it a good rub then it shoul leave your hair clean. Co-wash with the same product(to avoid bulid up) often.
4) Thou shalt deep condition. Deep conditioning is essential for black hair especially when its not relaxed...therefore takes longer to absorb anything. Use a good moisturising conditioner, overnight at least once a week. Either sit under a dryer for a few hours or sit with a warm-hot towel over your head for an hour or two before you go to sleep...with the conditioner still in your hair, rinse in the morning
5) When flat ironing,which you will only do every 6months to assess progress, always use a heat protectant. And make sure it's after you have washed and airdried.
6)Get a good leave in shampoo or make you own. I use warm water and olive oil in a spray bottle with excellent results
7) Moisture, Moisture , MOISTURE. Use a moisturising shampoo and conditioner, Use ur protein less so.
My regimen:My normal hair regimen is a modification of the crown and glory technique that can be found on www.growafrohairlong.com:
a)I get my hair braided every 4-8 weeks
b) Spray my hair every day with either a mix of olive oil and water or Safflower oil and water for moisture
c)I pre-poo for about 30 minutes using cholesterol/hair mayo or just plain vegetable oil twice a week after which I apply my conditioner which I leave on overnight and rinse out in the morning.I use hair remedy drench conditioner-australian formulation/charles worthington moisture seal treatment and rinse with cool water.
d)I only wash my hair with shampoo when I take my braids out-every 4-8 weeks. When I do this I use a clarfying conditioner to get rid of all the product bulid-up
This keeps my natural hair soft and silky and it looks amazing when I straighten it.
I get it pressed about three times a year. I always used tonnes of john frieda thermal protection serum first.
I also never blow dry unless i'm gonna straighten it.
