Should Jehovah's Witnesses be pleased or annoyed that Islam frowns on birthday parties?
Did anyone catch the British TV prog. that had some Islamic authority say Muslims should not celebrate birthdays? This means JWs are but a tiny percentage of religious people who believe birthday celebrations are wrong. Can that be true?
I didn't see the programme but I do have a report about it from a British newspaper. It's headed, "Birthdays are not Islamic, says cleric".
Saudi Arabia's top cleric, Grand Mufti Abdul-Aziz al-Shaikh, has said birthday parties are against Muslim 'righteousness'. He insists there are only two celebrations Muslims can enjoy and both of them are religious festivals - Eil al-Fitr which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha which marks the end of the haj pilgrimage. He said this in order to quickly smack down another Muslim cleric, Salman al-Awdah, who said on a TV call-in mid-August that celebrating birthdays was not against Islam. Clearly, it is for Wahhabi Muslims! Now, just how comfortable does that make the JWs feel? Or are they now going to publicly applaud Islam for doing something right?
Although JWs will try to dismiss this as nothing significant, it shows that one of the proofs they offer of being God's chosen group today is nonsense. They are not unique in forbidding their members to celebrate birthdays. And I say 'forbid' despite the way their leaders now carefully word their written statements as if it's a matter of conscience. Any baptised JW found celebrating a birthday will be in serious trouble at the Kingdom Hall! A non-baptised JW will not be baptised until they subscribe to this teaching.
So, to answer your question, most of them will be annoyed but they dare not let the public know that.
