Natural Hair Serum
My natural hair won't curl anymore, I've tried everything...HELP!?
I'm African American with naturally curly hair; however, I have consistently straightened my hair for almost a year and my hair does not curl anymore. So, now I have these ugly waves and straight ends.
I feel like I've tried everything to restore my natural curls. Here's a list of things I've tried:
Cut my hair 3 inches
Tried every curl defining shampoo/conditioner/serum in the world
Went 3 1/2 weeks without straightening it
Scrunched my ends after getting out of the shower
Used styling gel and mousse
Now, I roller set my hair every night to attempt to get the pattern back. It's Day 3 and I haven't seen much improvement. What should I do?
You have heat damage.
I would consider taking a break from straightening for about 2-3 months to help reduce the stress but on your hair. Instead, I would opt for letting it dry naturally or having your hair twisted or braided. If you can try conditioning once a week under heat for 30 minutes with a light protein like Aphogee Intensive Reconstructor to help strengthen the hair.
If you hair is severely damaged, to the point where it is breaking when you touch it, I would recommend cutting it off. The reason is that the damaged breaking hair will start breaking up into your healthier new growth. But here is what I would do if I were you:
1) Start getting deep trims every 6-8 weeks to help slowly get rid of damaged ends without a shock
2) Wear hair up and tucked away as much as possible. Avoid combing or brushing the hair which will encourage breakage and shedding.
3) Consider getting braids or weaving for no more that 6-8 weeks to prevent you from manipulating the hair. This will help reduce the urge to straighten or press.
I think if you can incorporate some of these things into your routine, you will see a difference!

Curly hair natural hair products Part 1
I wanted to know what is the best way to straighten multi-cultural hair?
Okay. I use to perm my hair every six months and i use to use a kids relaxer. I really do not need to relax my hair so i decided to go natural recently. My hair texture is very curly when wet, wavy when dried and sometimes frizzy. Every time i flat iron my hair it never stays straight. The roots are always puffy. I recently brought some john frieda hair serum and cream (steps 3 and 4) which worked to calm my hair down a bit. They usually say that blow drying helps the most before flat ironing. I am trying not to give up. Anyone have some tips?

If you're really gung ho about straightening it without chemicals then try using a flat iron with a pressing comb.
Use the flat iron to straighten the hair from tip to about 1" above the roots. The pressing comb will straighten the 1" portion of hair that remains.
Both the flat iron and pressing comb should be made of high quality metal in order to reduce damage to your hair. For example, I use a CHI which uses ceramic technology.
Find a ceramic pressing comb if you can then have someone that you trust with your life (or at least your scalp) do your roots.
Flat ironing and/or pressing really isn't something that should be done often. Once weekly at most. A good "press" should last you as much as five days if you're not super active.
All that being said though, it's best to love your curls. Find products that will help you manage them better.
