Do I need a separate moisturizer if I already use a serum?

I have oily-ish skin, but I've always used a moisturizer at night (right now I'm using Murad Skin Perfecting Lotion- I've also used Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion).

I also generally use some sort of repair serum (right now I'm using Loreal Pore Minimizing Skin Refinisher and Neutrogena Tone Correcting Night Serum- I'm also a fan of Estee Lauder Idealist Skin Refinisher, Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair, Clinique Turnaround Concentrate, Olay Regenerist Regenerating Serum, and Olay Total Effects Instant Smoothing Serum).

I've noticed most of these "serums" also advertise their hydrating benefits. So I'm wondering, especially since I have oily skin to begin with, do I really need to use a separate moisturizer?

A serum, although they can be moisturizing, goes deep within your skin. It is not completely necessary to use a moisturizer after; however, it is more effective to, hence why serums are referred to as "pre-moisturizers."

One thing you may also want to know is that it is important to moisturize ESPECIALLY if you have oily skin! Your skin produces oils due to lack of water (aka moisture) to over-compensate. By adding a moisturizer to the serum and entire regime (cleanse, tone, pre-moisturize, moisturize), you are reducing the oils and also further treating your skin!

What to look for in a facial cleanser?

I have tried Murad and Philosophy makeup optional kit, last year they both worked great for me, but when I bought them again, it seems that the Murad kit messed my skin up, and also made my face look oily with larger pores,and then the Philoshphy vitamin C serum that comes with it is breaking my skin out. I also have used The Oxygen Peel by Philosphy which also seems to break me out and also the aspirin mask I use which use to leave my skin clear and glowing now makes my pores large. I have combination skin which is acne prone (mild), I don't want to wear makeup...any suggestions?

You may be sensitive to the product you are talking about from the sounds of it. I am not sure just guessing? It's also important to stick to one major skin care line and not mix them because they may have different ingredients that could cause those kinds of reactions.

An esthetician could help you with that problem by giving a facial and analyzing your skin type effectively. There are some things that you may not know about your skin that they are well trained in. If cost is a factor then check out a beauty school where as you can pay fraction of a beauty salon.

You could ask them what products would be best suited for your skin and they may refer you to their skin care lines. If you aren't into that you could then ask them what you can buy in the store that is equal to what they are selling.

If you are acne prone then you should also consult with a dermatologist first before you go to an esthetician. Ask your family doctor to recommend you to a dermatologist if you are having skin problems with acne.
