How can I get my money back and keep good relationship with family?
I lent a very significant sum to a close relative, now he's not giving it back and avoiding me. I want to sue him, but the family is against that. Sometimes I think they all consider me as a money tree. I even wanted to cut all relations with them. Is it too rude?
I had something similar happen in my family. My cousin T loaned his brother R $20,000. R had already filed for bankruptcy twice and has a history of fast cars, fast women, and fleeting wealth. T is pretty well off (probably has a net worth of close to a million and growing). T and his wife were quite upset over R not paying them back - in fact R filed for bankruptcy shortly after he took the "loan" from T - therefore R isn't legally required to pay T back.
So what is the result... well T and R don't get along too well - family relations are stiff at holidays and its no fun for anyone involved. But T was pretty foolish to loan R the money in the first place with his track recrod of spending foolishly. T has been forced to just eat the "loan" - in other words he doesn't have a legal means to sue his brother.
My advice to you from seeing all of this is to make sure you don't do this anymore - even if you have to "act poor" around your family. I've gone so far as telling some of my mooching family members that all the nice things I have are cause I've maxed out my credit cards - nothing is further from the truth, but it keeps them from asking for "loans". My parents and other self-sufficient family members know the truth - that I work hard and save.
Further advice is determine if this amount of money you have loaned is significant enough to fracture your family over. If it means you can't eat or pay your bills I'd sue the heck out of that family member. Your good relatives will understand why you did it - the others can go to h....

How do you get your money back from a contractor you want to fire?
I am considering firing the contractor that is putting on an addtion on my house. The claimed when they took the first half of the money back in December that the job would start in early spring and be finished in time for labor day. They didn't start until the last day of spring, took them two weeks to do the foundation, the framers where supposed to start yesterday and now they say they aren't starting until Monday. THen the company gets all defensive and hurt when I complain. THey obviously overbooked themselves and my small job is getting treated like piecework, while other jobs they do are getting done. I know I should have put time conditions in the contract, but I didn't. Now I want them gone and another company to actually do the job.
That's a hard one, once they have your money you are almost at their mercy. I know this advice is to late, but next time pay them as the work gets done, pay them in stages as the work gets done. See if the state you live in has any type of better business complaint office.
