what's wrong with my outside AC unit?
I have a goodman AC unit outside for my central air conditioning at home. the model is ck36-a1. It is around ten years old, and I haven't had any problems so far.
when i turn the AC on on the thermostat from inside, there is air coming out of the vents but it is not cold at all.
when i go outside near the unit, i hear it trying to trigger itself on, but after a split second it gives up. it tries again a few minutes later, and does the same thing.
i noticed also that there is a burning smell...or burning rubber or something. i also noticed the rubber on the wire/coil has stripped off a little bit. i see laces rather than thick black rubber on parts of the coil. can this be what is burning, thus causing the smell?
what is causing the unit not to start, though? the ac guy is coming out to my house tomorrow and i don't want to have to pay a bundle. is there a reset button or something i can use to get the thing to work?
There's a good chance the "rubber on the wire/coil" is a wire running from the run capacitor to the contactor or to the compressor that has overheated due to the compressor drawing high amperage while trying to start. It sounds like your run capacitor is defective, which is probably a "dual" run capacitor (fan and compressor). If there is no damage to the condenser fan motor or the compressor, the repair should not be that expensive. If the technician has the part on his truck/van, the repair should take no more than an hour.

Central air ? on evap coils and fins!?
Could anyone tel me if you can replace just the evap coils and fins or do you need to rep[lace the entire unit? Also if possible could I get a rough estimate for the cost of parts.
I know they are connected, but can I replace just them or do I need to replace the entire unit? Also what kind of cost am I looking at in either case?
I forgot to mention that it is a York unit if that helps any.
The removal and replacement of an evaporator coil will cost you about $750 for a 3-4 ton unit. Some prices will be higher or lower.
When an evap coil is replaced, it is generally due to loading from dirt and fungi. Make sure that if the rest of your cabinet is contaminated with mold (especially the blower wheel) that you consider a clean-up, or if more practical, replacement of the air handler.
If the coil was leaking, there is a possibility of moisture in the refrigerant lines. Make certain that the lines are carefully evacuated, and that a drier is installed. Otherwise, moisture left in the lines could destroy your new equipment.
