Indonesia - Nature in Harmony

A Look At A Unique And Delicious Variety Of Indonesian Coffee

If you have been drinking coffee for years, as many people have, you may wonder if there are any truly unique and flavorful brews out there to enjoy. There is one type of Indonesian coffee that is truly unique. It is unique not because of the kind of beans that are used in the grind but in the way that the beans are prepared for brewing.

If you have ever had kopi luwak coffee you know how delicious this Indonesian coffee tastes. It is subtle with flavors not found in other Arabica or Robusta beans. You get the full flavor of the beans without any bitterness. How is this possible in a lightly roasted coffee? Because of the unique method in which kopi luwak is produced.

If you don't speak Indonesian, you should know that kopi means coffee and luwak means civet. Kopi luwak translates to "civet coffee" and it is these unique mammals that help with the production of this unique Indonesian coffee. Unlike plain Indonesian coffee from regular beans, kopi luwak involves civets eating ripe coffee cherries and excreting the digested beans in their droppings.

If the idea of drinking coffee made from excreted coffee beans is one that is not something that appeals to you, you should know how incredibly clean and safe the beans are. After being collected, they are dried and roasted at high temperatures. This makes them extremely safe to drink and also brings out the delicate but amazing flavors that can be found in this rarest of Indonesian coffee.

Kopi luwak often commands very high prices. It can range in price between one hundred and six hundred dollars US per pound of beans. This high price tag reflects the labor intensive nature of producing the beans and the relative difficulty of finding the beans themselves.

In the beginning, Indonesian coffee producers needed to track the civets through the forests in order to find where they were leaving their bean-rich droppings. Luckily, civets often would leave their droppings in specific locations. This made it very difficult to find a sufficiently large supply of beans to meet demand. Now, this production method has changed, although kopi luwak is still quite rare and hard to produce.

Now that the value of kopi luwak has been established, Indonesian coffee producers have found ways to allow the civets to range within a more enclosed area where they have a steady supply of ripe coffee beans that they can eat. Because they civets are in a more limited area, finding their droppings also becomes easier. However, despite this more efficient way of finding kopi luwak, there is still a limited amount of the beans available for consumers to purchase.

As kopi luwak has become more popular and the methods of production have become more efficient, finding a source of beans has become easier. Before, fans of this Indonesian coffee would wait outside coffee shops in hopes of managing to purchase beans when they were delivered. Now, it is often possible to find a supply of this coffee on the Internet as well.
