Is the water from my airconditioner safe to drink ?
I have an inverter air-conditioner that on a hot day produces a lot of water (about 3 litres an hour - I measured it). I always thought the water was just extracted from the air in the air-conditioning process and would be very free of chemicals but I wondering if anyone new if it was safe. I m not planning to have a drink of it but thought I could use it to water herbs and vegetables. Any advice would be great.
No, the water is not safe for consumption. The water is produced by condensation on the evaporator coil of the air conditioner. While the water is nice and cool, the location of the coil is a relatively warm, dark place and it is a perfect site for the growth of molds and spores. Having a near constant supply of air being drawn over the coil gives it increased opportunities to have germs, bacteria and viruses get into that water. Often times it will form slime in the drain pan the water is collected in. Most hvac service technicians will advise you to pour a small amount of bleach into the drain pan to help combat a buildup of this slime.
