Pregnancy is a time when your body undergoes sudden and rapid changes. With a body in flux, it is very important for pregnant mothers to understand what kind of food is best for them and their baby.

New research has found that pregnant mothers need to take in an extra 300 calories a day. Pregnant mothers who habitually eat enough for two may find themselves developing undesirable health conditions, which can also affect the baby's health.
Even if you have been eating a healthy diet prior to your pregnancy, you have to pay extra attention to what you eat when you are pregnant. A healthy diet is vital to a successful pregnancy because it ensures correct fetal growth and reduces complications.
The guidelines below will help you keep tabs on what you have, and should have, been eating.

Nutrition guidelines
1) Avoid empty calories.
Choose whole grain foods every time. Substitute high calorie foods, for equivalents that have higher nutritional value: instead of having a sugary cereal for breakfast, add fruit to a plain one.
2) Get 1500mg of calcium per day
Studies have shown that pregnant women need at least 1500mg of calcium per day. This strengthens and densifies the woman's own bones (which are under strain) and those of the growing child. Most women don't get enough calcium even when they are not pregnant. So, extra effort has to be made to get the right amounts of calcium, for the sake of the child. Calcium-rich foods include tofu, salmon, green leafy vegetables and dairy products.
3) Foods rich in iron
Try to get as much iron as possible in your diet. Helpful food include fish, poultry, eggs, enriched grains and green leafy vegetables. However, since iron absorption from food takes place at a very slow pace, many doctors advise the intake of iron supplements. Iron supplements often lead to constipation, though it may help if you take your supplements with food. To improve iron absorption, include food that is rich in vitamin C.
4) Folic acid
Folic acid is central to foetus growth, and taking in 400mg each day can prevent more than 70% of birth defects commonly found in newborn babies. Natural foods like dark green vegetables, oranges, grains, beans, lean meat and liver are rich in folic acid. You also get folic acid supplements, and doctors often recommend the intake of prenatal vitamins that contain folic acid.
5) Dietary restrictions
Do not skip meals. You will be gaining weight, but this is not only completely natural, it is vital to the baby's health. Try not to overeat - though this is certainly the lesser of two evils. Include a variety of foods in your meals every day: this will provide a foolproof way of absorbing a wide range of vitamins and minerals. Eat frequently, and regularly, so that your blood sugar levels don't peak and dip.
6) Drink plenty of water
Keeping your body hydrated makes you feel healthier and happier - and you may need all the help with this you can get.
7) Avoid large doses of supplements
Although some amount of fortified foods is helpful, large doses can cause health problems. So always discuss with your healthcare provider before you start taking supplements of any sort.
Avoid undercooked food
Undercooked food is dangerous to any digestive system, but poses a huge threat to pregnant women. The more you rack your body, the greater pressure you put on the child, which can lead to disastrous results. It is wise to avoid certain foods, and not to take risks. Fish like swordfish, mackerel and tilefish have particularly high levels of mercury, which is a common culprit of gastric trouble.
