I have extra media in my AquaClear 70. Is that bad?
Will it not do its best now? Maybe break it? I have the Aquaclear floss, the carbon, and the bio-max in additional to the extra media: Algone above the AquaClear floss, then a layer of aquarium (cut-your-own) floss above that, and then another floss between the carbon and the bio-max. Then a vertical floss on the left of the horizontal stuff. Will the filter be bad now?

you don't need all that. just use aqua clear sponge, it lasts forever, bio-max and carbon or ammo chips. you could forget the carbon and put poly fill in for extra filtration
just squeese out sponge once a month and rinse beads in used aquarium water.

are there many practical reasons for getting a Ph.D in Bio MEMS?
and by practical i mean if i go ahead and take the extra schooling after my masters, focusing in that area, are there many jobs out there for it?
actually im getting a masters in mechanical engineering.
Okay, right now you have a BSc in something, like Bio or chem or even chem-engineering.
Look at the job requirements for 90% of the jobs in your field. If 90% of the jobs require a Ph.D in that subject...and that subject is easy for you....no problem.
However, if the Bsc is the terminal degree (meaning there area no PHDs needed to work in the field) the the advanced degree is good only for Academics and Basic Research projects. this means the Competition for funding, jobs and compensation is really stiff. like impossible.
If on the other hand, there is normally a future for someone with a Ph.D. in your field, and (the present employemnt situation is terrible) then okay. Just keep in mind, right now you see the future where an advanced degree is an asset. for the rest of the employable world an advanced degree just makes you overqualified for regular work.
Having been there, I can assure you, if job hunting is poor, and it will be sometime in your career, you will omit your advanced degree on the application if it means making your car payment and affording a baby sitter.
Bottom line. Think more practical in terms of the employability of an advanced degree. If you want it for the personal achievement, as I did, fine, but dont expect people to kowtow just because you know what a phase diagram is.
