Combo Hair Loss
Thyroid meds: My doctor switched me from 100 mcg of Synthroid to 50 mcg of Synthroid and 10 mcg Cytomel.?
He thought the combo might help with fatigue, hair loss, dry skin, etc. He said there are new studies stating this works better for some. Has anyone else had success with this combo?
The thyroid gland, in its natural state, makes several different hormones. T4 and T3 are the main two hormones the thyroid makes. In order to be used, the body must convert T4 to T3. In healthy people, the body makes some of its own T3 and gets the rest of its T3 by converting T4 to T3. In other words, for people who don't have thyroid problems, there are two sources of T3: 1. naturally made T3 and 2. T3 that has been converted from T4.
Synthroid is plain T4. Cytomel is T3. The "standard treatment" for thyroid disorders is just to give Synthroid. However, increasingly, doctors are finding that their patients do better on a combination of T4 and T3 because it better mimics what happens naturally in the body (i.e., you make and/or take both T4 and T3, so you don't rely solely on T4-to-T3 conversion to get T3). Some patients have issues with conversion of T3 to T4 (these are called slow converters) and so their TSH and T4 lab tests will look fine, but they are really still not "normal." Adding some Cytomel will help raise the free T3 levels and may alleviate any symptoms you're still having.
In short, YES, I think this will help you. I'm seriously considering asking my own endocrinologist for some Cytomel because I've heard such good things and I'm still so TIRED. And don't worry about the fact that your new dose seems "lower," because it's not. One microgram of T3 is about four times "stronger" than one microgram of T4. So you're really getting the equivalent of 90mcg of Synthroid (50 mcg Synthroid + 10mcg of Cytomel times 4), which is not that different from what you were taking.

Use a juicer to extract juice from the onion. rub it on the scalp, and massage it for 1-5 minutes. Then, put a bag over you hair and leave in in for 20 MINUTES, then wash it out. Oh, and while you scrub with onion, if it gets red, apply honey,
Do this twice a week. You won't notice much change for the first 4 months or so, so try these methods, as they work good too.
*Massage into the scalp and hair coconut milk or Aloe Vera gel. Leave it for 1/2 hour, then rinse with warm water. Repeat 3 times a week. You can buy an Aloe Vera plant, cut it's leaves and use the gel inside.
*Massage almond oil on scalp 2-3 times a day, daily. This will stop further hair loss.
Rinse hair with a mix of apple cider vinegar and sage tea to help hair grow
*Massage into the scalp and hair honey with egg yolk. Leave for a 1/2 hour, then rinse.
*Boil 1 cup mustard oil with 4 tablespoon henna leaves. Filter and bottle. Massage on the scalp regularly. It is very good for hair growth. This MAY leave a orange-ish tint in hair.
*Make a paste by mixing olive oil, honey and cinnamon powder. Massage on the scalp and leave it for 15 minutes. Wash with a mild shampoo. Repeat it for 3-4 times a week.
Oh, and to keep from loosing more hair, use a mild shampoo and don't wash your hair TOO often. You could ruin it.
You can get these ingredients from Asian grocery stores/ super markets.
