What are some ways to do chemical free cleaning on floors and in a living room?
there are pets in the house. The pets are attracted to the smells of the chemicals and lick at the surfaces and get sick.
I dust with microfiber cloths that are just barely damp. They trap and hold the dust better. For floors, I generally use my steamer. But Simple Green is non-toxic and biodegradable and used in the proper strength, works well also. It's highly concentrated when you buy it but there is a dilution chart available on their web site. I even use it to shampoo carpets. Smells nice too!
For carpet sprinkle, I use nothing more than plain old baking soda. I sprinkle and let it lay for about 1/2 an hour before I vacuum it up. I often go raid my herb garden and snip a few sprigs of lemon balm, lavender or lemon thyme and toss it into the dirt collection cup on my vacuum. The heat of the air moving through the machine spreads the herb smell while you sweep.
Cats will tend to stay away from anything citrus scented, particularly lemon. Dogs, however, don't give a hoot! Even the new "green" cleaners might have things in them that are not pet friendly so read the labels carefully and even check out the MDS sheets at the manufacturer's web site.
But I've found steam is about the easiest and best way to clean without chemicals. Yeah, you can use white vinegar but it's not all that effective at cleaning. I do use the white vinegar and water for things like soap scum in the shower and for a quick disinfection of the counters and such. Baking soda leaves a haze that can drive you bonkers trying to get rid of it. Honestly, I haven't found much that a bit of Dawn dish detergent, hot water and a microfiber cloth won't clean.
