I need to make my head partially bald, with some hair coming through. I want to get to work on a john mccain costume, and my hair is slightly too long to be just combing it over, and I don't want to cut it. So I was thinking maybe cutting part of a bald cap so that hair can go through?
I think most bald caps would tear if you tried cutting them and bringing your hair through. You might be able to poke some holes and pull some hair through using a plastic tool that comes with some hair highlighting kits, but the bald cap might tear doing it this way also.
If you can get all of your hair under a regular bald cap then you could use a regular bald cap and use spirit gum to apply crepe hair. There are also some cheap comb-over bald caps available (see sources).

Still another way to stress your hair is through curling it constantly, especially when you use chemicals or high heat, such as those that you get when you use a curling iron or styling rollers. You may want to avoid using high heat or curling your hair at all. This may mean that you need to avoid going to the salon too often, as some salon chemicals can certainly hurt your hair and make it more difficult for you to keep a healthy head of strong hair.
