| | The Botanic Verses $14.74 Replacing early vinyl-only compilations as the definitive history of the band's earliest days, The Botanic Verses -- groaningly obvious pun of a title aside -- makes for mighty fine listening. If the March Violets never quite escaped the shadow of fellow Leeds denizens and early supporters the Sisters of Mercy, it's not for lack of trying -- Denbigh was no Andrew Eldritch clone in terms of singing style (though, like Eldritch, he clearly loved his David Bowie collection), while the dark, aggro surge of the music carved its own wired and romantic path. Guitarist Ashton and bassist Elliott found a reasonable space between Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Bauhaus for their respective approaches, and were as much masters of shade, throb, and scalpel sharp guitar lines as anyone. Perhaps inevitably beginning and ending with the mighty punch of "Snake Dance" -- the initial version is the extended 12" mix, and arguably superior in terms of all around drama to the original -- The Botanic Verses isn't organized by any particular order of recording. Full recording details are provided for the trainspotters -- noted producer Flood got some of his earliest credits on a variety of tracks -- while it's very conveniently noted whether Garland or Murray was duetting with Denbigh at any particular point. It's no surprise in the end why the band essentially ended after Denbigh's departure in later years; when he was around, the tension usually built to the breaking point. The male/female vocal dynamic was definitely one of the March Violets' strong points, and their most successful tracks push that hard, whether it's the more immediately radio friendly dance-rock fury of "Walk Into the Sun" or the murkier edge of "Children on Stun." Topology Bassist Rob Davidsons' "Round Roads" is a landscape of musical ideas, dense and complex yet filled with clarity of expression. To round off the album an inventive arrangement of minimalist composer Steve Reichs' "Clapping Music", only without the clapping. One could compare it to the sounds minimalist sounds of Michael Nyman, Terry Riley and Steve Reich, with a touch of Astor Piazolla, and the modern jazz influences of Pat Metheny. Wrap this up in the visual, cinematic style of Bernard Hermann and the Cinematic Orchestra and you're getting close. One thing is a certainty, these influences combine to create a sound that is incomparable not only in Australia, but internationally. |

| | A Healthy Distrust $13.97 Independent rap phenom Sage Francis could have spent his entire career in the underground, winning dozens of poetry slams and collecting battle MC awards at least once per year. But his voice needs to be heard by more hip-hop fans, not simply because he's a gifted rapper but also because he's provocative and intelligent. It's no surprise that the increasingly diversified Epitaph label signed him, but it's also no surprise that Francis hasn't mellowed with his new contract. In fact, since his first solo record for Anticon, he's grown fiercer and gained more ammo (courtesy of the political situation circa 2004-2005). The beats (never a highlight previously) are not only cleaner than his eight-track days, but also bigger and better, contributed by some of the best producers in the sub-underground: Sixtoo, Danger Mouse, Alias, and Reanimator among others. Overall, the Sage may be polemical on a level like few other than Dead Prez, but he also has a metaphysical side matched by few other than Jeru tha Damaja. (Has any other rapper ever imagined a battle DJ match between the Sun and the Moon?) The combination is effective, since commentary often ages better when it's delivered on multiple levels. Unlike political firebrands KRS-One and Rage Against the Machine, Francis speaks in metaphor so much, and indulges in abstract disassociation so frequently, that although listeners won't learn any lessons immediately, they also won't be bludgeoned over the head with his ideas. On "Gunz Yo" he doesn't simply decry gun violence, he investigates the symbolism of weapons, from the gun to the phallus to the tongue. He also finds much compelling material from his social life; "Agony in Her Body" nakedly explores the dichotomy of sex and violence, then the next track, "Crumble," reaches a higher point of romantic catharsis with a bone-rattling breakdown at the end contributed by Sixtoo.
