black hair and growth, help!?
i got my hair braided, and now they're off, i need certain products that i could buy at any beauty supply store. like shampoo& conditioner, also hints on do's and dont's when it comes to growth. so if ure a black girl with this problem or know about hair, or if u just know about hair in general, plz feel free to answer. i really need my hair to grow in the bottom. thnks!!

I am assuming the hair you have now is very short? If it is, the good news is that you have a great start to growing out your hair at its healthiest, and it is easier to grow new healthy hair then fix damage. The less washing (no more then 3 times a week, but less is better) blow drying and flat ironing you do the better your new hair will look. Wearing a silk head scarf to bed to protect your hair to stop tangles and breakage may help you get longer faster and stop frizzies. Try for styles that do not need to be brushed out a lot right now while you are growing your hair as the static will frizz your locks and also dry them out faster. If you absolutely must blow dry or flat iron, always use a protective hot tool spray first to minimize the damage done, and use as low a setting as possible. The damage will add up though, so I really would recommend finding a style that needs no heat and still looks great instead. The quality of the hair you grow starts with how well you take care of your body, so now is not a good time to start a crash diet. Eat well and take a multivitamin every day, as well as an omega 3-6-9 pill from fish oil not flax oil. This will help you grow your hair faster and healthier. They sell hair specific vitamins in both beauty supply and health stores as well. Some black women I know have used Rogaine for Women to help grow out hair faster, so speak to a dermatologist if you think you need added help to grow your hair.
In a shampoo and conditioner line I suggest that you look for products that moisturize your scalp as well as your hair. Someone here recommended Pantene, but I respectable disagree with this as it has waxy plastics (petroleum based) in it that builds up on your hair and makes it harder to process in the future. Black hair is more delicate as it is, so any products that make it harder to process or relax your hair down the road will mean more damage as they will need to leave chemicals on longer. It also makes it harder to deep condition through the buildup of product. Pantene is really a product made for the average(white) woman and I don’t think it give black hair what it needs, only a quick fix that leads to buildup not moisture. I would not recommend Pantene for any hair type myself.
Look for products that have ingredients like tea tree and lanoline in them, and have as little synthetic color or fragrance as possible. Some of the best smelling products will be bad for your hair, so save sent for your favorite perfume instead. Just to warn you some of the better shampoos on the market do no lather up much, so don’t be alarmed if pick one that doesn’t, it will have no effect on how well it works. The cosmetic industry adds lathering agents to shampoos, but they don’t get your hair any cleaner. The fewer added ingredients in your products the better. The shampoo I use now lathers hardly at all, but is great!! Some shea butter products are great for black hair as well. If your hair is very dry or damaged from the braids, try looking at hydrolyzed proteins or hydrolyzed keratin in your conditioner to add strength and shine, but it may be best to cut the dead ends off completely then to try to fix it. Stay away from petroleum based product as they don’t work well, and stick with natural oils. If you massage a natural scalp oil (like for those who wear dreads) into your scalp it will help get blood circularizing and feed your roots for better growth. Depending on whether or not you will be leaving your hair natural or relaxing or coloring your hair while you grow it out will have a big affect on how thick and rich a conditioner will need to be to keep hair looking healthy and shiny. The less you do right now the better to get your hair to the length you want it. Always wash hair in as cool a water temperature you can stand, and leaving conditioner on for a minimum of four minutes to let these ingredients soak in and bond with your hair. Do the majority of your combing in the shower with conditioner on to avoid breakage. Using a leave in product that separates and defines your curls will mean less brushing and combing and will help you by not needing to wash your hair as often to reset your curls. I would look for one that stops fly-away and also has a UV sunscreen in it to keep your hair looking healthy and stop sun damage or dicoleration of your hair. If your leave in products contain any isopropyl alcohol in them, don’t use them because they will dry hair out more.
Growing out hair can be tough thing to do, so be patient and find a good cut for your transition. Hope something I said here helps you out, and good luck. I am sure your hair will look beautiful and healthy sooner then you think.

How to Grow Black Hair: African American Hair Care Tips
This article is a must read if you want to grow longer hair, or even stop hair loss. No matter how many products or treatments you have tried, hair growth can be achieved despite years of stunted hair growth, shedding, and hair trauma. Trust me, I am speaking from personal experience. About three years ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Unfortunately, one of the side effects of my medications and chemotherapy was hair loss and balding. Devastated by having patches of hair on my head, during recovery, I did what most people do---I bought wigs. At first, the wigs seemed like a perfect solution. But, they were really a cover up. Moreover, my niece would scream when she saw me because she couldn’t recognize me with my “new wig.” So, I begin using hair loss products in hopes to regrow my hair. Unfortunately, this was another unsuccessful venture. Rogaine. DHT Blockers. Minoxidil. All of these products failed to perform what they promised. Further, I spend hundreds of dollars on Minoxidil every month, only to have no hair growth and a sore scalp. Frustrated, I decided that there had to be a method or some natural product available that would grow my hair, stop my shedding, and stop my balding. Believe it or not, I found one. However, there are some things you need to know about hair loss before I tell you what worked for me.
What Causes Hair Loss?
Hair loss, shedding, and balding occurs for several reasons. They may occur because of heredity, diet, lifestyle choices, or prescribed medications. Even your hair care products and styling techniques may be facilitating your hair loss or stunting your hair growth. If you are like me, a combination of these factors may be retarding your hair growth. If you buy most, if not all, of your hair care products from traditional stores, you are most likely buying a hair-damaging useless product. Most hair care products, including most of those that claim to be “all-natural,” contain synthetic emulsifiers and harsh detergents, such as Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Phosphates, and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. Unfortunately, these products are loaded with toxins and chemicals that actually dry and strip your hair of vital nutrients it needs to grow.
How to Grow Your Hair, Stop Balding, and Stop Hair Loss?
You have to attack hair loss on the inside and the outside. A great hair growth regimen has three necessary components: a healthy eating plan, substantial water intake, and a high quality hair growth and hair care product.
Step One: A Healthy Hair Eating Plan

Water also transports the important nutrients your body needs throughout your body. Hate drinking water? Add lemon and Splenda to have a healthy, tasty alternative.
Step Three: Buy a High Quality Hair Growth Product
I suggest you go all-natural. Unnatural hair care products are a no-no for someone who wants long-lasting, healthy hair growth. Find a hair growth product that contains powerful essential oils, natural herbs, and vitamin rich nutrients your hair needs to survive. Look for products with ingredients such as: Aloe Vera, Citrus Fruits, Jojoba, Rosemary, and Sage. Make sure you stray away from all natural products that use natural extracts. Extracts are not as powerful as essentials oils. They are a cheap substitute for the real thing. Although there are several natural hair care products on the market, not all hair growth products are created equal. Make sure you read the fine print. Most “natural” products still contain phosphates, sodium lauryl sulfate, petroleum, mineral oil, and other lab created humectants that ultimately damage your hair.
