| | Hair of the Dog $15.99 Hair of the Dog is, appropriately, a Spitfire band who understandably believes the history of rock begins with Aerosmith and ends with Zeppelin. Such adherence to barbecue boogie seems refreshing, but the natural questions rear: Does HOD possess tunes worthy of its influences, and can the quartet rise above being a Saturday kegger attraction (not that there's anything wrong with that)? The good news is this record rolls out super-sized rock. The lyrics are predictably enjoyable: barnyard liaisons, monster truck dalliances, and party-right fighting. Dealer-ode "Cadillac Jack" won HOD a recording contract, and "Stomp" features some mega scraping. The violent "Whisky Tango" quotes Steven Tyler quoting Frank Zappa. And, thankfully, not a single bawling ballad exists. The playing comes off tight and fast enough to avoid blooze plodding, these riotous boys just need to stumble across a rifforama or turn of phrase as gargantuan as those slung by Nugent or even Skid Row to break from the pack. | | Avoid the Light $19.99 Germany's Long Distance Calling approaches post-rock from a prog metal perspective, which in itself is little heard of. Avoid the Light, their second album, offers six mid-length pieces (between seven and twelve minutes). Five of them are instrumentals based on repetitive rhythms, crunchy riffs, textural guitars, and a certain ominous/melancholic mood. The bits of found dialogue in "Apparitions" sound like nothing more than a curtail to post-rock's obligatory cliché, but it's a minor offense in an otherwise strong track. The pieces tend to go on for too long, with little happening once the arrangements have unfolded, but that, too, is typical of a certain form of post-rock. In that regard, "359°" steps slightly out of the mold to offer unexpected changes. "The Nearing Grave" features Katatonia frontman Jonas Renkse on lead vocals. It is the only song on the album, and the only track where Long Distance Calling sound like an ordinary hard rock/prog metal band -- an unnecessary move. The closer, "Sundown Highway" pairs a Mogwai vibe with Saga-like eighth-note guitar lines over a prog metal foundation -- until the acoustic guitars come in! These guys have a good idea, and good chops to support it. If they can learn to get where they are going in less time, their next album could be fabulous. | | Avoid Danger $10.97 Lead singer Salim Nourallah and his crew are definitely happy and almost joyful on this brief but sweet album of power pop tunes. From the opening chords of "The In-Crowd," the band concentrate on a summery sounding, breezy pop sound that brings to mind the Velvet Crush after listening to the Odds and the Gin Blossoms all day. Tight but very catchy, the Happiness Factor rely on time-honored blueprints to get their messages across. "Insane Ledger" sounds like a cross of Gary Glitter if leading Green Day through a garage session. It's powerful but doesn't quite grab the listener's full attention. A softer, mid-tempo orchestral-tinged pop tune, "Proper Channels," has all the markings of a Beatles' B-side or a typical Michael Penn song. A Hammond organ gives it a fuller, richer sound as well. Perhaps the highlight is the groove-riddled power behind "Soft," with Nourallah letting himself go more than usual. The bridge recalls the Replacements at their finest. You might find yourself hitting replay before it's halfway finished; it's that impressive. "Weight of the World" misses the mark as another paltry Beatles- and Elvis Costello-influenced tune that is, primarily, two songs in one. Thankfully, they get back to their strengths with the psychedelic touches of "Avoid Danger." Costello can also be deciphered on "The Man From the Filling Station." and the lovely "Use Radios!" -- the former having much in common with Costello's "Watching the Detectives." The punchy rock ska of "The Hand That Feeds" is another simple gem but the kicker is "Mr. Critic," which takes the air out of most rock journalists. Dry Natural Hair: How to Avoid It!!
Once my hair permed wit loose curls, what should i use to avoid dryness and falling off?
Ok, I am planning to perm my hair of loose curls. I am so excited. Now I do know that to get loose curls, you ask for spiral perm. Anyways, now, I have heard that there are bad side effects of perming: dryness and falling off... Is there any way to avoid them? Hair products? Anything? I need to know, thanks!
If you've never had a perm before I'd say do it. Just take good care of it afterwards by using a good shampoo and one with moisturizer. I think it will look cute. Even though a perm is a little hard on hair, if you take care of it properly,it's fine to get one.A perm will put lots of body in your hair too. I think you're giong to love it. BTW, I'm a retired beautician.
